A Comparative Study of Suicide Attempters and Non-attempters Registered in Mental Health Center

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to compare suicide attempters with non-attempters with mental-disorders. The study conducted a survey from July 2013 to August 2013. By the convenience sampling, the participants in this study consisted of 302 people with mental -disorders who registered in a community mental health center in Seoul. The main results of this study are as follows. First, income, mental illness diagnosis, drinking, stress, and suicide ideation were significantly different between suicide attempters and non - attempters. Second, in the suicide attempters, suicide ideation was significantly different by the diagnosed age, stress, and self-esteem. But among non-attempters suicide ideation was significantly different by gender, age, religion, depression, diagnosed age, stress, and self-esteem. Third, suicide ideation was influenced by stress in suicide attempters, while it was influenced by stress and self-esteem in non-attempters. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is necessary to consider suicidal attempt, stress and self-esteem in order to design effective suicide prevention programs.
